The 10th annual MUSEXPO (www.musexpo.net), which is the global independent music business and showcase conference held at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel April 6 – 9, 2014 in the city of Los Angeles; considered by the music industry to be the epicenter of the U.S. and international music business is honored to welcome Lucian Grainge, Worldwide Chairman & CEO of Universal Music Group (UMG), the world’s leading music company, to its event next year.

Mr. Grainge signed on in 1986 to launch PolyGram Music Publishing U.K.; within five years, he’d led the fledgling division to become one of the top three publishing companies in the U.K. He was subsequently appointed Deputy Chairman, and then, in 2001, Chairman & CEO of Universal Music U.K. In 2005, Lucian was named Chairman & Chief Executive of Universal Music Group International before assuming his current position in 2011. He then led UMG’s successful acquisition of the recorded music assets of the legendary British music company EMI, revitalizing its iconic Capitol Records, and, in the process, further strengthening UMG's position as the global leader in music.

Lucian has spent his entire career in the music industry and has signed and worked with many international stars including, among many others, ABBA, Justin Bieber, Elton John, Eurythmics, Metallica, Rihanna, U2 and Amy Winehouse. Over the span of a quarter century he has not only pioneered new approaches to the signing and development of the world’s most successful recording artists and songwriters, but has also consistently championed the development of innovative business models and partnerships with a wide range of technology and media partners around the world. Most recently, Lucian topped Billboard's “Power 100” list at No.1 as the most powerful executive in the music industry.

BMG APPOINTS MAIK PALLASCH AS MANAGING DIRECTOR GSA

Music rights management company BMG announced recently that it has appointed Maik Pallasch as Managing Director Germany, Switzerland & Austria (GSA).

Maik Pallasch has worked in the music industry for over 15 years and joined BMG as Vice President German Repertoire in October 2011. Since then, he has added to the success of BMG’s German business by signing artists and writers such as Mando Diao, Sacha Skarbek and Raf 3.0 to the company. Pallasch’s previous career included positions at Sony/ATV Germany, B162, Suction Records in Toronto and Motor Music / PolyGram Germany.

Pallasch is based at BMG headquarters in Berlin, reporting to CEO Hartwig Masuch. CEO Hartwig Masuch stated, “Maik Pallasch has successfully expanded our German business since he joined BMG. His promotion is well-deserved.”

DAN McCARROLL named President of Warner Bros. Records!

Warner Bros. Records (WBR) has announced the recent appointment of Dan McCarroll as President. McCarroll’s responsibilities will include helping to forge creative strategy for the label and overseeing all A&R activities. Effective immediately, he will report to Chairman & CEO, Cameron Strang and be based in Burbank, CA. McCarroll was most recently President of Capitol Records.

Interscope Records’ Vice President of Pop Promotion Greg Marella has exited the major as of last week, and signed on with Lucasz “Dr. Luke” Gottwald’s new joint-venture with Sony Kemosabe Records. Marella will be the company’s Executive Vice President, and will start with the Los Angeles-based label on November 4.

Australian national youth broadcaster Triple J will be taking over the ABC digital station Dig Music with plans for a massive re-launch in 2014 aimed at the over-30 audience. Accessible on mobile via the ABC Radio app, online, on digital radio and on TV, Dig Music will be a portal to the best new music from Australia and overseas. Many musicians will be taking to the mic to play songs they’ve hand-picked and relate why they love them, including Sarah Blasko, Moby, Paul Dempsey, Missy Higgins and many more. Over the next six months, listeners will be able to have input on the station, by letting Triple J know what they’re loving, plus who they want to hear on the station. The Ultra Music Festival has announced plans to expand its offering to Cape Town and Johannesburg, South Africa, and Tokyo, Japan. The South African shows are February 14, 2014 in Cape Town and the following day in Johannesburg with a lineup including Tiesto, Alesso, Nicky Romero, Kruwella, W&W, Goldfish, Black Coffee, Mi Casa, Euphonik and DJ Fresh. Details on the Tokyo show will be revealed at a special Road to Ultra 2014 show on December 20, 2013. The Ultra Music Festival now has a reach of five continents. The festival already has a presence in Miami, Santiago, Chile, São Paulo, Brazil, Buenos Aires, Argentina, Ibiza, Seoul, Korea and Croatia.

Producer and singer-songwriter Aquile has signed a co-publishing deal with Fieldhouse. The soul-pop artist first stepped into the spotlight while competing on season three of “The Voice” and his inspirational performance immediately captured the interest of three judges before joining Christina Aguilera’s team. Since his participation last fall, Aquile recently released his debut single “Control.” In the next few months, he will be embarking on a 25-city tour to promote his upcoming album.

Atlantic Records Chairman & CEO Craig Kallman tells A&R Worldwide that the label has officially signed Austin, TX native Max Frost as of June 19. The ultra-talented Max Frost has a unique creative musical sensibility that is reminiscent of classic Beck meets an Americanized Gorillaz blended with Frost’s own unique sensibility. Look for Max Frost to become a global music sensation in the not-too-distant future.

Highly respected record producer and legendary A&R man Ron Fair has produced the new album from Matt Goss who has is signed to various labels worldwide for his forthcoming album Life You Imagine. The deal follows Goss’ stint in Las Vegas where he performed his critically acclaimed headline show at Caesar’s Palace, encompassing the style of the Rat Pack.

Award-winning composer, producer, conductor and arranger Christopher Lennertz has signed a worldwide administration agreement with BMG Chrysalis US and a co-publishing arrangement on selected projects.

Columbia Records Chairman Rob Stringer was honored last week as “Visionary of the Year” by the UJA in New York City. In attendance were music royalty including Jay-Z, Adele, John Legend, Neil Diamond and many others, as well as global music industry heavy-hitters Howard Stringer, Marty Bandier, Doug Morris, Clive Davis, Craig Kallman, Jody Gerson, Jonathan Dickins, Rick Krim, Nick Gatfield, David Massey, Ashley Newton, Stu Bergen, Peter Edge and many hundreds of others including A&R Worldwide and MUSEXPO Founder Sat Bisla. The event opened up with a tongue in cheek video of Rob Stringer learning the fundamentals of Judaism. The MC and host of the event, and former recipient of the UJA “Visionary of the Year,” was Daniel Glass Founder & President, Glassnote Entertainment. A&R Worldwide congratulates Rob Stringer on receiving this well-deserved and earned award.

UK-based independent record label Cherry Red, which has just celebrated its 35th anniversary has announced the signing of several new acts to its burgeoning roster. Some of the new signings include Jack Bruce, Luke Haines, The Polyphonic Spree and Uriah Heep’s Ken Hensley, all of whom are currently in the process of finalizing new recordings.

KIDFORCE

Los Angeles-based “party punk rock” act KIDFORCE has secured North American booking agency representation with Nikki Wheeler and Rob Prinz at UTA (United Talent Agency). In addition, the young 23-year-old has also just been confirmed to perform in Vladivostok, Russia for the V-Rox Festival in August and has also been confirmed to perform numerous dates at the official showcase venues for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Russia. KIDFORCE has been garnering some good early tastemaker support on radio stations such as KROQ Los Angeles, Flux FM Germany, WZNE Rochester NY and many others. In addition, he’s been organically racking up social media support and his local fan base in Southern California. British alternative rock band Rubylux has recorded its brand new album. The group was signed to BMG worldwide for its previous album; the deal came about when they were signed out of their performance at MUSEXPO Europe in London (the same year Temper Trap were also signed out of the same event to Korda Marshall’s indie label Infectious Records). Rubylux tells A&R Worldwide that they are currently in talks with a number of major and independent labels for signing and have also recently secured Phyllis Belezos from ITB as their UK-based booking agent.

Sean “Diddy” Combs

Revolt TV, the upcoming cable network led by Sean “Diddy” Combs, has finalized a national carriage agreement with Time Warner Cable (TWC). Together with previously announced distribution, this will make Revolt one of the largest launches in cable TV history when it goes live this fall. Envisioned as a maverick television channel with an emphasis on music programming, live content and a robust social media component, Revolt TV is scheduled to launch in fall 2013. “This is a landmark distribution deal that demonstrates Time Warner Cable’s commitment to bringing a platform for music artists and fans to their subscribers,” stated Revolt TV Founder and Chairman Sean Combs. “It positions Revolt to come out of the gate strong, and we look forward to igniting the passion of initial audiences across the US.”

Red Bull Records has announced the signing of Ohio-based rock band Beartooth. The band is the latest signing to the energy drink giant since they announced the recent signing of A&R Worldwide supported and developing act New Beat Fund who are currently playing the Vans Warped Tour.

German trip-hop and cabaret style chanteuse SCHMIDT (www.femmeschmidt.com) who recorded her debut album with multi-Platinum producer Guy Chambers (Robbie Williams) has been writing and recording new material with Dave Stewart (Eurythmics). The talented young beauty has been on the radar of numerous music supervisors and brands worldwide and has been developing a strong international presence over the past 12 months.

Nate Albert Sr. Vice President A&R Universal/Republic tells A&R Worldwide that he is completing work on projects from The Weeknd, Phantogram and several other A&R priorities for the major label; he’s also working on a special project for a legendary US label now a part of the Universal family.

Swedish indie-folk trio VIDAR has signed an exclusive songwriter agreement with BMG Chrysalis Scandinavia.The trio consists of Emmy Deivert (percussion, drums, keyboard), Tuva Hardorp (vocals, harmonica, bass) and Maija Hardorp (vocals, guitar) who formed the band already in their teenage years.

Columbia Records has announced the promotion of Sr. VP Promotion Lee Leipsner to Executive VP Promotion, reporting to label EVP/GM Joel Klaiman. “This advancement is well deserved,” Klaiman stated. “Lee is the consummate head of promotion. A true leader with extensive relationships at radio, he’s great with artists and is willing to travel anywhere for the good of Columbia’s artists,” while Leipsner, who was recently named the Major Label Promotion Executive of the Year at the 2013 Worldwide Radio Summit Industry Awards, added, “I would like to give my sincere thanks to Rob Stringer, Ashley Newton and Joel Klaiman for this tremendous opportunity and for their continued belief and support. The world of music and digital eco-systems continues to evolve and change on a regular basis. Having worked as the A&R for the TV show “Voice of Arabia,” Richard Hussein tells A&R Worldwide that he’s just completed another TV music program called “Coke Studio Arabia,” in which Richard is the A&R executive for the project for Coca-Cola and Universal Music for the region. The show has nine episodes airing on MBC – the largest TV network in Arabia. The format is fusion of music and each episode engages a duet across some of the biggest international and Arabic stars into a music studio to create a hit track and sound. Denmark’s Emmelie de Forest was the winner of this year’s Eurovision song contest, which was held in Mälmo, Sweden this past weekend. Her performance of her song “Only Teardrops” landed her the top position by votes decided by viewers across Europe. You can watch her performance by clicking HERE.

Downtown Music Publishing President Justin Kalifowitz and Jesper Reginal Managing Director & Founder of Crunchy Frog the independent Danish music publishing and record label recently signed a joint-venture publishing partnership. The duo signed the deal at the recent MUSEXPO in Los Angeles and Reginal tells A&R Worldwide that he and Kalifowitz look forward to working together on numerous new creative and business opportunities. Crunchy Frog represents a variety of artists including Thee Attacks, Powersolo, Junior Senior, Sterling and numerous other acts.

Martyn Ware of Heaven 17, the British Electronic Foundation, and formerly Human League has been voted onto the Board of The Featured Artists Coalition (FAC), where he will join other directors including Sandie Shaw, Nick Mason of Pink Floyd, Ed O’Brien of Radiohead, Dave Rowntree of Blur, Fran Healy of Travis and Mark Kelly of Marillion in supporting artists to ensure they’re treated fairly.

Swedish artist and songwriter Per Gessle (Roxette, Gyllene Tider and Son Of A Plumber) has partnered with leading Swedish independent Cosmos Music Group. He joins the company as co-owner and board member together with original owners Fredrik Ekander, Christian Drougge, Kent Isaacs and Cai Leitner.

Google has officially launched its entry into the music-streaming wars as of last week. Bearing the moniker Google Play Music All Access, the service’s web and mobile interfaces feature millions of songs, recommendations, charts and playlists, and instant radio stations at a cost in the US of $9.99 a month. Early adapters get a free trial month, with sign-ups before June 30 paying just $7.99. As rumored, there is no free tier available.

Nielsen has announced that last Thursday night’s 12th season “American Idol” finale garnered the lowest ratings ever for a season's final episode, with only 14.3 million Americans tuning in--a plummet of 33% compared to last season's finale, which attracted 21.5 million.

The New Zealand Music Commission tells A&R Worldwide that they have appointed music industry veteran Victoria Blood as its chairperson for a two-year term. She replaces Anthony Healey who has retired from his tenure after almost five years in the position. Blood was the former manager of Gin Wigmore (an A&R Worldwide alumna who was signed by Island Australia’s Michael Taylor and secured her national US Loew’s TV synch after a music supervisor from New York City saw her perform at MUSEXPO with support from NZ On Air).

Russia’s leading annual rock conference Colisium Music Convention will celebrate its 5thyear, and will take place in the heart of Moscow, Russia May 17 -18, 2013. Colisium unites professionals from the music business across the world and attracts main figures from record labels, concert agencies, festivals, educational institutes, press, radio, TV channels and other media professionals. Vladimir Kravchenko tells A&R Worldwide, “It’s the right place to meet your colleagues, find new partners, make presentations, discuss new marketing technologies and future plans in the music world. Our event provides panel discussions, seminars, presentations and great showcases.” The annual event attracts hundreds of rock-based companies from Russia, Eastern Europe and other parts of the world.

Universal Music Group has appointed Hayley Lloyd to the new London-based role of VP Global Digital Accounts, reporting to Amanda Marks, Head of Global Digital Accounts. Lloyd was previously Director of Global Digital Accounts. Universal's Global Digital Accounts team, based in both Los Angeles and London, provides continuous worldwide support to the company's major digital partners.

Divinyls vocalist Chrissy Amphlett succumbed today after a three-year struggle with breast cancer. Best known for 1991 worldwide smash “I Touch Myself,” which hit No.1 in her native Australia, No.4 in America and No.10 in the UK, the sultry songstress had also been battling multiple sclerosis since 2007. Chrissy Amphlett was 53 years-old.

Former Paramount Pictures music supervisor, Jennifer Cornett tells A&R Worldwide, “I’m excited to let you know that I will be doing licensing for Dr. Luke’s team.” Cornett will continue to do music supervision as well as handling licensing for Prescription Songs & Kemosabe Records. Cornett was formerly an A&R executive for Daniel Glass’ Glassnote Records in Los Angeles.

Young UK-based artist manager Martha Kinn has joined London-based Machine Management, whose current roster includes Friendly Fires, Clean Bandit, Mika, Scrufizzer, Mausi and others.

Peter Chalcraft, President of Notting Hill Music’s US companies tells A&R Worldwide he was leaving the publisher after more than two decades. It was stated in an announcement that Chalcraft had decided it was time for new pastures and has sold his shareholding in the group and its associated companies to Chairman Andy McQueen and Managing Director David Loader.

Tesco, which is one of Europe’s largest supermarket chains has named Charlotte Harrington as its new Head of Home Entertainment and Books. She was until recently working as Tesco’s multi-channel general merchandise boss – a position she had held since October 2012. Prior to that Harrington worked as Tesco’s toys, nursery and sport category manager. Harrington replaced Rob Salter who left the company a few months ago to pursue other opportunities.

Ticketmaster has announced the promotion of UK division Managing Director Chris Edmonds to Chairman, Ticketmaster UK and Executive VP International Strategic Partnerships, it was announced last week. “As we continue to expand our international business operations, Edmonds’s extensive knowledge and understanding of the ticketing and live event industries will be an invaluable addition to our international executive team,” said Ticketmaster International President Mark Yovich.

BMG has announced that Pop Noire, one of France’s hottest upcoming labels and production units, has signed a worldwide publishing agreement with BMG. Pop Noire’s catalogue includes shares to songs of Lescop, Savages and John & Lehn. The French singer Lescop was honored with a nomination in the category Best Newcomer at this year’s Victoires De La Musique Awards. His self-titled debut album was released in October 2012 and went Top 40 in France.

Brandon Schmidt has been appointed VP Acquisitions of Caroline – the Independent Services division of Capitol Music Group – it was announced last week by Caroline EVP & GM Mike Harris, to whom Schmidt will report. Schmidt will be based in New York.In his new position, Schmidt will be responsible for leading the identification and acquisition of new partners for Caroline, while working closely with Caroline’s existing partners to provide A&R expertise and insight to help identify breakout opportunities.

Entrants will be able toupload videos to a dedicated YouTube channel which will be viewed by the publicand judged by professionals associated with Syco. Prizes for the competitionwill be awarded every two weeks with a grand prize at the end of the year.

 

Fan-funding music platform PledgeMusic has expanded its operations in Australiaand New Zealand and announced the appointment of Scot Crawford as GMfor the region, where he will work on label integrations, fulfillment solutionsand key artist development. Previously, Crawford served in a similar role atShock Entertainment, Australia’s largest independent music & DVDdistributor.

 

Andy Villalpandotells A&R Worldwide that he has left his A&R position at ColumbiaRecords to start his own A&R consultation and development company calledWeBringTheHits.

Universal Music Group (UMG) announced that it has entered into a definitiveagreement to sell EMI Recorded Music’s European rights in NOW That's What I Call Music!to Sony Music Entertainment, subject to regulatory approval. Financial detailswere not disclosed. UMG retains its pre-existing rights to the highlysuccessful compilation series in Europe and acquires EMI Recorded Music’srights outside of Europe. The announcement was made today by Max Hole, Chairman& CEO of Universal Music Group International, and Edgar Berger,President & CEO, International, Sony Music Entertainment. This sale followsthe approval of UMG’s acquisition of EMI Recorded Music by the EuropeanCommission in September 2012, and marks the last of the mandated assets to bedivested. With over two decades of multi-platinum international success, the NOW That's What I Call Music!series debuted in Europe in 1983. The series has since generated salesexceeding 200 million albums worldwide, including more than 84 million copiesin the UK. It remains the longest selling branded compilation album in the UK.

 

Pandora head TimWestergren stated last weekin a blog post that, in an effort tocombat rising royalty rates, Pandora users would now face a 40 hour per monthlimit on use through mobile devices. The Fuji Rock Festival,Japan's longest-running music festival, last week announced that the recentlyreformed Nine InchNails and Bjorkwould be the headliners for the festival’s 17th edition, taking place July 26 -28 this year. Other acts confirmed for the festival, which has five mainstages, four minor ones and generally hosts 200 international acts, include fun., DJ Shadow, Yo La Tengo, TameImpala, Of Monsters and Men, Rocket from the Crypt, The xx and Flying Lotus. Lastyear the festival, which usually attracts between 110,000-130,000 concertgoerseach, enjoyed a record-shattering crowd of 140,000.

 

Imagem Music announced last week that it had signed a worldwide, multi-year administrationdeal with hip-hop producer TheLegendary Traxster (a.k.a. Sam Lindley). Traxster is best knownfor producing the Platinum hit song, “My Chick Bad” by Ludacris featuring Nicki Minaj. The hitsong helped Ludacris score a No.1 album on the Billboard 200 as well as giving Nicki Minaj herfirst Grammy nomination.

 

Platinum selling Dutch singer Wendehas signed a masters deal with BMG Benelux. Under the agreement, her new album Last Resistance will bereleased on May 10th 2013 in Benelux and Germany in 2014 through BMG.

Piero Giramonti has been named General Manager, Harvest Records, it was announced last week by CapitolRecords Group Executive Vice President MichelleJubelirer, to whom Giramonti will report. As the head ofHarvest, Giramonti is charged with bringing an independent-label approach tothe company; signing a select group of innovative artists and helping themachieve success, while empowering them with the freedom to pursue theirartistic visions. Harvest will provide dedicated A&R and marketingresources for its artists and will integrate its efforts with those of thenewly expanded Caroline, which will primarily provide commercial support, radiopromotion and licensing resources to the label. Giramonti will be based inHollywood, California at the iconic Capitol Records Tower.

 

Frontside Promotions Group has appointed Alfie Williams to the position of Vice President of Promotion(Western Canada) commencing March 4, 2013. Williams joins the Frontside teamfrom his most recent stint as General Manager of Cordova Bay Records. Prior toCordova Bay, Williams spent over a decade in the promotion department atUniversal Music Canada's Vancouver office.

The National Blues Museum is currently in the process ofraising funds to build a world-class cultural attraction located in downtown St.Louis. The facility will be focused on education, entertainment and communityinvolvement. With 23,000 square feet of programming space, a 100-seat theateras well as technology and artifact-driven exhibits, the National Blues Museumwill explore the Blues and celebrate the genre as the root of all modernAmerican music. The projected opening date is late 2014. The Museum recentlyreached out to Activision/Blizzard VP Music Affairs Tim Riley for helpin publicizing the project; he in turn approached A&R Worldwide to spreadthe word to its global readership. “To be honest, I was shocked to learn thatthere was no official museum or place that honored our most cherished form ofmusic, so needless to say, I was honored that they asked me to help raiseawareness and funds within the music community,” Tim tells us. “It’s my opinionthat this is a vital part of our past that must not be forgotten and should betaught to the future generations of musicians and music fans. “The vision isnot just Muddy Waters’shoes behind a glass case, but a really engaging experience, somethingtechnology-driven that combines music, history and culture,” Tim concludes.

Highly respected and decorated A&R executive Ron Fair willformally take on his new position to run Virgin Records under the Capitol MusicGroup at the famous Capitol Records Tower in Hollywood, CA. A formalannouncement about his new role is set to be made in the coming days.

Billy Bragg

Legendary UK artist andperformer Billy Bragghas cemented a 20-year relationship with Cooking Vinyl by signing his sixthrecording deal. Billy’s new album is titled Tooth& Nail and was produced in Los Angeles by Grammy award winningproducer Joe Henry.The new recording deal, which for the first time covers the world, cements atwenty-year relationship between artist and label and is actually the sixthtime that Bragg has signed with Cooking Vinyl. The agreement, a global servicesdeal, will see Cooking Vinyl release Bragg’s forthcoming studio album, Tooth & Nail, acrossthe world, with Bragg retaining the copyright in the recording. The album isslated for release on March 18th in the UK and March 19th in the US, where itwill be distributed via RED.

 

Amazon is enticing Apple product users to purchase music through its site withthe grand opening of a MP3 web store that is targeted specifically for iPhonesand iPods. The store is available through Apple's Safari mobile web browser,with any music purchased being saved to the user's Amazon Cloud Player library.The music purchased will be available for the iPhone, iPod, iPad, Kindle Fire,as well as Android phones and tablets.

Sweden’s music sales increased nearly 14% in 2012. Stats released by Swedishindustry showed that recorded music sales rose 13.8%, with digital salesaccounting for 63%. From those digital sales, 90% of the income was generatedfrom streaming services.

 

Global digital music and video distributor The Orchard has announced theappointment of NaomiMoran as GM UK/Europe. Based out of The Orchard’s EuropeanHeadquarters in London, Moran will oversee all sales, marketing anddistribution efforts throughout the UK and Europe, reporting to Colleen Theis, who isnow based in New York as The Orchard's Chief Operating Officer. Titanium

NewZealand band Titaniumare generating a lot of interest amongst major and independent labels acrossAustralasia and beyond. The band’s Auckland, New Zealand-based manager Matt Colemanexclusively revealed to A&R Worldwide that Titanium have sold 50,000singles and albums in the past 12 weeks. They are also the first local act tohave three singles in the Top 40 and are rapidly approaching Platinum sales fortheir debut album, All ForYou. Los Angeles-based GabiKochlani tells A&R Worldwide that she is currently workingindependently in management and publishing. She is now co-managingwriter/producers JustinGray and BillyClark as well as ShepSolomon, AllanEshuijs and JonesWetterberg.

 

SoundExchange broke a new record for 2012 with their royalty payments. Thefinal tally for the year was just under $462 million paid out, which is up 58%from 2011. Also, SoundExchange announced they have paid more than $1 billion inroyalties to the creators of music since the organization's inception.

Sony Corporation of America has announced that its entered into a contract to sell its US headquarters building at 550 Madison Avenue in New York City to a consortium led by The ChetritGroup, a New York-based owner of commercial properties in New York City andother major US real estate markets. The sale price is $1.1 billion (USD), withthe deal expected to close in March 2013. SCA and other Sony businesses(including Sony Music Entertainment, Sony/ATV Music Publishing and SonyPictures Entertainment) will remain in the building for up to three years undera leaseback arrangement with the purchaser. After repaying debt related to thebuilding and other transaction costs, it is expected that Sony will receive netcash proceeds of approximately $770 million, realizing an overall gain on thesale of approximately $685 million to be recorded as operating income.

Metallica announcedover the weekend that they've taken control of all their master recordings andare launching Blackened Recordings for all their audio and video output, withthe first release being the live DVD QuebecMagnetic, due out December 10. Frontman James Hetfieldstated, “We would like to thank everyone at the Warner Music Group for 28 yearsof a fantastic relationship, particularly since 1994 where we truly felt we hadpartners in every aspect of our business in North America.” With drummer Lars Ulrich adding,“It’s always been about control for us as a band. Forming Blackened Recordingsis the ultimate in independence, giving us 100% control and putting us in thedriver's seat of our own creative destiny.” WMG will still keep their hand in,though, as Blackened has signed a deal with Rhino for manufacturing anddistribution in North America.
