‘THE ROCK APPRENTICE’ synopsis.
Tim has just started at a school for the gifted but he is shadowed by his past with the death of his famous, classically admired father and the expectations of those around him to follow in his footsteps. His father died in an accident that has left his mother paralyzed and Tim the head of the family, working and looking after his mum and 10 year old brother, Tommy. He appears to be a rather introverted classical piano player, but hangs out on the fringes of the cool set and is befriended by a popular and beautiful lead guitarist (Kira) who plays in the top rock band at the school. Tim quickly develops strong feelings for her as she represents all that he desires both musically and socially. Their friendship is marred by the dominating and possessive self –appointed bandleader, Zakk, who instantly hates Tim, but actually has secrets of his own.
To make ends meet Tim scores a job in a local vintage record store and it is there that he is introduced to the Wiz – an aging, eccentric rock legend who lives as a semi-recluse. Through a sequence of events Tim and the Wiz form an unlikely friendship and Tim has his eyes opened to the Wiz’s world of pub rock and begins the struggle to change his musical conditioning and learn guitar. Tim uses this new found skill to build on the relationship with Kira and passes one of the Wiz’s songs off as his own. This starts a roller coaster of bad luck in which the song gets entered in a national song-writing competition as Tim’s own, the Wiz subsequently finds out, Tim’s mother has a breakdown and Social Services threatens to take him and his brother away.
Tim is forced to own up to his mistakes, grow up and take responsibility and ultimately find his own voice and style of music in order to hold his family together, rebuild his relationship with the Wiz, win Kira and secure his future. An original screen play written by Melanie & Patrick Creamer.
